An in Law Related Stress: How to Get Rid of It?
Question: How can I reduce stress when stress comes from my mother in law? She’s living with us as of the moment. And I can’t seem to hold it together. She keeps on criticizing every move I make. I even thought meditation techniques might just work. But now I’m really not sure anymore if there is help at hand.
Answer: Even though you are staying with your mother-in-law as her guest, you are a grown human being with certain rights and among your guaranteed rights is the right to privacy. So, get your head around this important concept. The next time she is “watching” you, turn to her and pointedly say. “Yes? Did you want something?” The next time she is criticizing you, turn to her pointedly and say, “Excuse me? Did you know it was rude to criticize people? Do you do this to everyone you know?” You will have peaceful moments, because you will absent yourself from her by going to your room or outdoors by yourself.
Nothing you do pleases her? Then stop trying. The truth is that when we attempt to please others we end up pleasing no one.
